Our story takes children on an exciting and vivid exploration of places they wouldn’t otherwise think about. The authors, environmental changemakers in their own right, have paired problems with solutions to empower children to imagine their place in the environmental movement. It models how children can work together to solve big problems—which is crucial for the generation that will face the consequences of climate change and years of careless and wasteful consumerism.
Meet the Creators
Sharona Shnayder
Co-Author
Sharona Shnayder is a Nigerian/Israeli climate and peace activist, National Geographic Young Explorer, and Founder of the global grassroots movement Tuesdays for Trash - tackling the garbage crisis facing our planet. She believes that the home we share is more than just soil under our feet - it’s a language. A language we all understand, and it has the potential to bring the world together in ways we’ve been taught to forget. That's why she co-wrote Journey to Away, a children's book helping the next generation turn waste into action and hope.
Amelia Eichel
Co-Author
Amelia Eichel is a plastic reducer and nature lover from California who has worked with children for 15 years. She is the co-founder of Waste Free Santa Cruz and CEO and co-founder of Wonderfil, a refill technology company that enables people to refill their liquid and cream products anywhere. Amelia was inspired to co-author this book by the lasting impact that early education about waste had on her own life. From a fourth-grade tour of her local recycling facility, her parents' commitment to minimizing household waste, and then focusing on circular economy research in college, Amelia maintained a deep curiosity about sustainability since childhood. She hopes to pass that curiosity and pursuit of change on to the next generation.
Sydney Fort
Illustrator
Sydney Fort is an artist living in Portland, Oregon. She takes inspiration from the beautiful Pacific Northwest for her artwork that includes drawing, graphic design, photography, and sewing. She believes that individuals can make an impact and serve her local area through neighborhood cleanups and mending clothing for the community to reduce fiber waste.
Our Why….
Trash is not something we often talk about with kids. This book is a great way to start! As other countries stop accepting trash from the United States and our waste management systems become overwhelmed with excessive waste, trash is something we won’t be able to ignore for much longer.
This book serves as a kid-friendly introduction to understanding trash and waste management in the United States. It demonstrates creative ideas for how to reduce and reuse items we usually throw away, and it gives children a realistic idea of how much trash we produce and where it tends to end up when we throw it away.
